IPE

Low to Moderate Maintenance-No Warranty

If you are looking for an extremely durable natural wood decking surface IPE (also known as iron wood) has become very popular in recent years and would be right for your project. For years this material has been used extensively as a decking surface in the southern hemisphere. If left unfinished IPE is a naturally durable low maintenance surface that will turn silver from UV’s over time. With treatment it can obtain a very rich wood finish which will require more maintenance.

When IPE first hit the northwest there were many problems with availability and constancy of materials. There was also a lot of trial and error when it came to installation, lots of broken tools, lots of additional installation labor. Barefoot Backyards actually got to a point where we refused to install it. But times have changed and so has Barefoot Backyards. The source for, and quality of IPE has become more stable. We now know that it is better to work with a smaller board, i.e. 1 x 4 vs. 1 x 6 or 5/4 x 6. Because of the strength of IPE a 1 x 4 can span up to 24” and the narrower board eliminates the cupping and the additional labor associated with the wider boards. We also have dismissed the hidden fastener system in favor an exposed fastener application of pre-drilling and using a matching stainless screw. By using this installation system it eliminated all the extra man-handling labor and when we put it down we know it’s going to stay were we put it.

Cedar

Moderate to High Maintenance-No Warranty

Tried and true for the northwest cedar can provide a long lasting serviceable deck. The key to this is good quality cedar. This is why at Barefoot Backyards if a client insists on cedar we will only recommend and install 2x6 materials. We have found smaller dimension boards to be from lesser quality trees and their life cycle much shorter.
